For most investigators, Excel is the tool of choice to analyze financial information.

  • In this course you will learn how you protect your valuable data from accidental changes
  • Using simple functions you will be able to find transactions that stand out
  • The use of filters gives you the power to find exactly the data you are searching for
  • Subtotals will allow you to summarize your financial data at an instance
  • You will learn how to create interactive summaries using the advanced function of PivotTables in your analysis
  • Finally an overview of typical patterns for an illegal use of bank accounts allows you to further explore the possibilities to analyze financial data 

Utilizing interactive training modules and practical assignments this course gives you the opportunity to learn the required skills step by step. The course has 9 modules, each is 10-15’ in duration.

Session 2: Prepare the analysis

Learning goals: In this session you will prepare the documents we are going to analyse to protect them from accidental changes.
Duration approx. 10 minutes.

Module 2: Analysing data

Session 3: Sorting deposits and debits

Learning goals: Sorting tables is a basic function of Excel which allows you to quickly show the highest amounts of incoming and outgoing money.
Duration approx. 15 minutes.
Prerequisits: Prepare the analysis

Session 4: Using filters to analyse account statements

Learning goals: Filters allow you to find exactly the information you are looking for in a large data set.
Duration approx. 10 minutes.
Prerequisits: Sorting deposits and debits

Session 5: Practice Filters

Learning goals: In this session you can practice your skills in using Excel's filter function

Session 6: Use subtotals to summarise data

Learning goals: Subtotals allow you to summarise incoming and outgoing money of a bank account.

Session 7: Practice subtotals

Learning goals: Practice to use subtotals and filters to find and summarize payments to "Best Food". You will also use subtotals to investigate Buder's monthly mortgage payments.
